Pneumology
The pneumologist examines and treats disorders of the lungs and airways. During the consultation, the doctor discusses complaints such as shortness of breath, chronic cough, wheezing, asthma, bronchitis or symptoms indicating sleep apnoea. If necessary, additional investigations, such as a lung function test (spirometry), allergy tests or medical imaging (such as RX-thorax or CT-scan), are done to reach a correct diagnosis and targeted treatment

What happens during a pneumological examination?
At Doctor's House Antverpia, we perform various tests to assess your lung health and respiratory function. The tests we perform depend on your symptoms, risk factors and medical history. We always adopt a personalised approach, with an eye for your comfort, discretion and safety. Do you doubt whether a pneumological examination is necessary? We are happy to think along with you.

Anamnesis
During the medical history, the doctor will ask specific questions about your respiratory symptoms, such as shortness of breath, coughing, wheezing or fatigue. Medical history, smoking habits, allergies and family history are also discussed. This gives the doctor a complete picture of your lung health in order to start targeted further investigations or treatment.

Clinical research
The physical examination helps the pneumologist detect signs of respiratory diseases such as asthma, COPD or infections. Among other things, the doctor listens to your lungs with a stethoscope and assesses your general condition. If necessary, additional tests will follow to refine the diagnosis.

Pulmonary function tests
Lung function tests provide insight into how well your lungs are working. Through measurements such as spirometry and body plethysmography, lung volume, airflow and gas exchange are evaluated. These tests help diagnose and monitor conditions such as asthma, COPD or restrictive lung disease.

Rx thorax
An RX thorax, or chest radiography, is a simple and quick imaging technique that allows doctors to get a clear view of the lungs, heart and surrounding structures.
When is a lung examination at the pneumologist indicated?
Are you experiencing prolonged cough, shortness of breath or chest tightness? If so, a consultation with the pneumologist can help identify the underlying cause and initiate appropriate treatment. A timely lung examination is crucial to detect respiratory diseases early and prevent serious complications. Some common indications are:
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) - Persistent cough, mucus production and increasing shortness of breath may indicate COPD, a chronic lung disease that progressively worsens without treatment. Asthma - Recurrent episodes of wheezing, tightness of breath or coughing (especially at night or on exertion) can be symptoms of asthma. Pneumonia - Sudden onset of fever, chills, coughing with coloured mucus or chest pain when breathing may indicate a lung infection that requires further investigation. Pulmonary embolism - Acute shortness of breath, sharp chest pain that gets worse on inhalation, and an accelerated heart rate may indicate pulmonary embolism, a potentially life-threatening condition. Sleep apnoea - Symptoms such as loud snoring, breathing stops during sleep, and excessive daytime sleepiness can indicate sleep apnoea, in which breathing temporarily stops during sleep. Lung cancer - Persistent cough, coughing up blood, weight loss or chest pain may be alarm signals of lung cancer and call for prompt evaluation.
Early detection helps avoid complications
Proper diagnosis and timely treatment of respiratory problems can significantly improve quality of life and prevent complications. Do you have symptoms that persist or worsen? Then do not hesitate to make an appointment with our lung specialist. Together, we will look for an appropriate solution.
How does a consultation with the pneumologist go?

1. Intake & Anamnesis
A pneumology consultation starts with a comprehensive intake interview. The doctor asks targeted questions about your symptoms such as cough, shortness of breath or fatigue, and inquires about your medical history, smoking habits, lifestyle and environmental factors. This allows the doctor to get a complete picture of your lung health.

2. Investigate
Depending on your symptoms, additional investigations may take place, such as a lung function test (spirometry), blood analysis or imaging of the lungs (e.g. RX or CT scan). These tests help assess the functioning of your lungs and detect any conditions such as asthma, COPD or sleep apnoea.

3. Discussion
After the tests, the doctor will discuss the results with you. If necessary, a diagnosis is made and a tailor-made treatment plan is drawn up, such as inhalation therapy, allergy advice or further follow-up. Your report will be available afterwards in your eHealth or CoZo file. In case of severe or unclear symptoms, a referral may follow for additional examination or specialised care.
