Vascular surgery

Problems with the blood vessels - such as constrictions, varicose veins or blood clots - occur regularly and can cause serious complications if not detected in time. At Doktershuis Antverpia, you can go for a thorough evaluation and specialised treatment of your vascular health, both preventively and in case of already existing complaints.

What investigations fall under vascular surgery?

We map your vascular system with targeted examinations, such as ultrasound of the blood vessels (duplex). The choice of examinations depends on your symptoms and risk profile. We always adopt a tailor-made approach, paying attention to your safety and comfort.

Anamnesis

During the initial consultation, the doctor questions your symptoms, medical history, medication use and any family risk factors. This helps to get a clear picture of your vascular care needs and plan the appropriate investigations.

Clinical research

The doctor performs a physical examination to evaluate your general health and the condition of your blood vessels. This is often done in combination with targeted tests and forms the basis for further diagnosis.

Duplex survey

In a duplex examination, we combine ultrasound with a measurement of blood flow in blood vessels. This allows us to detect narrowing, occlusion or dilation of arteries and veins in time. The examination is painless and is done on the neck, abdomen, legs or arms, among others.

Sclerosing

Sclerosing is a treatment for superficial varicose veins. A fine needle is used to inject a special fluid into the vein, causing it to contract and gradually disappear. This is an effective and low-impact technique.

When is a vascular examination indicated?

Do you experience pain or cramps in your legs when walking, suffer from cold feet or visible varicose veins? If so, there may be an underlying vascular disorder. A consultation with the vascular surgeon is important to detect these problems early and prevent complications, such as:

Peripheral arterial vascular disease (PAV) - Narrowed arteries in the legs cause pain when walking, which often disappears at rest. Aneurysm - A localised dilation of an artery (often the abdominal artery) at risk of rupture. Often without symptoms, but potentially life-threatening. Carotid stenosis - Narrowing of the carotid artery, which increases the risk of stroke. Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) - A blood clot in a deep vein, usually in the leg. Can cause swelling, pain or pulmonary embolism. Lymphedema - Fluid accumulation in an arm or leg due to a disrupted lymphatic system. Is often accompanied by swelling, tension or a heavy feeling.

Staying healthy starts with prevention

Many vascular conditions can be well treated or even prevented with timely medical follow-up and a healthy lifestyle. It is therefore important to have your blood vessels checked, especially if you have risk factors such as heredity, smoking, diabetes, high blood pressure or a sedentary lifestyle. In doubt? How does a consultation with the vascular surgeon go?

1. Intake & Anamnesis

The consultation starts with a thorough interview in which the doctor inquires about your symptoms, your medical history, your lifestyle and possible family risk factors, such as cardiovascular diseases. In this way, a complete picture of your vascular health emerges and follow-up examinations can be targeted.

2. Investigate

Depending on your symptoms and risk factors, specific tests will be performed, such as a duplex ultrasound, blood pressure measurement or a test of blood flow in arms and legs. These tests give a clear picture of the condition of your blood vessels and allow timely detection of constrictions, varicose veins or other abnormalities.

3. Discussion

The doctor will discuss the results with you and consider whether further follow-up or treatment is appropriate. If necessary, a treatment plan is drawn up, e.g. for sclerosis therapy, surgery or lifestyle modification. You will receive a clear report via the eHealth or CoZo platform, and if required, a referral or an additional follow-up examination will follow.
